Sixers vs Kings immediate reaction thread

Immediate reaction thread. Recap will be up later tonight. Some quick thoughts/info/talking points:
- Spencer Hawes was held out of the second half due to back spasms. He will travel with the team and be a gametime decision, but I'm not particularly optimistic he'll play. After the game I asked Thaddeus Young whether Collins had indicated to him who might start if Spencer can't go, and he said Collins hadn't. My money is on Vucevic if Hawes can't play. Collins has always been hesitant to start small with Young/Brand.
- Thoughts on Jimmer? I thought you saw exactly all the problems with him playing heavy minutes, particularly on the defensive end. He just can't guard anybody.
- Cousins had a decent stat line, although 5 defensive rebounds, 4 turnovers, and only 1 assist isn't something you want to see in 31 minutes. This is the "good" DeMarcus Cousins game, which to me is scary.
- The Kings backcourt couldn't defend anybody.
- Thad was shot out of a canon once again in the second quarter. He was everywhere on both ends of the court. This wasn't one of his best statistical games, but I thought he had a great impact on the game.
- Jrue was great. 17 points on 13 shots, 8 assists, 4 steals. At least this time the turnover problems in the first quarter weren't all his doing.
- How great is it to see Jodie Meeks knock down a couple of three's? If those start falling, I think the slow starts we've been having will start correcting itself.
- Elton Brand is your player of the game. Besides his stat line, his 1-1 battle with DeMarcus Cousins late in the first half really ignited the team, and his defense on Cousins and ability to keep him off the offensive glass turned the game around even before his shot started falling. And, obviously, him scoring 21 points on 14 shots is a great sign for this team. His previous high this year had been 12 points.
Another big win!
And LAVOY gets his first NBA points!

Was at the game
Attendance was piss poor, but it was a good time. My bro and I are doing the January ice pack or whatever it’s called. This team is realllllllllllly good. A lot of fun.

The only thing i dont get is
We are playing well and we are a really fun team to watch but I went to the game on saturday and it was dead. It just doesnt make any sense to me. This team is playing some great basketball and I hope the fans start to see that soon. great win tonight bring on the knicks.

the sixers became the fourth team in philly when all the other teams were playing well and winning, so they just need to keep playing well and people will notice eventually and attendance should rise.

Philly fans are bandwagon fans. They only care if you have a shot at winning a title. Otherwise they’ll sit home, not watch any games and offer their “expert” opinion on the team by calling in the local sports radio stations.

What Michael said. I think this is true of pretty much every American sports team outside the big name NFL franchises. You might be able to nitpick a few exceptions here and there, but unfortunately, they are just that. Exceptions to the rule and not the rule itself.

looked great again tonight,i was at the game which was my 3rd this year,and once again the stadium was pretty much devoid of people,im sure it will fill up if they keep it up till February,stretch of non stop marquee home games (heat,lakers,mavs ect.)

How many more times do the sixers have to do this before we’re willing to consider them legitimate contenders to make the eastern conference finals (or more!)? Should we wait until after the heat game next Saturday?
Personally, if they can handle the knicks tomorrow night pretty easily, I’m going to jump on board. A little early? Maybe, but it’ll be a lot more fun this way!

What the?!?
I’m a Sixers fan (on the other side of the world), and love each and every win, but even I recognise they’ve mainly played the chump teams of the league so far. They’re beating the teams they’re supposed to beat. Nothing more, nothing less.
Let’s revisit the conversation on whether the Sixers are legitimate contenders in the East after mid February.

I think they can win a playoff series. But ECF is too optimistic. I don’t think they could even get past Atlanta on a 7 game series. I hope they play Boston :)

I am cautiously optimistic right now. They are not facing great teams, but the mediocre to bad teams that they are facing they are not just beating, but blowing them out of the water.

Gah, hit Post too soon.
It’s a long season and I think this lockout shortened season and compact schedule favors youth and depth like the Sixers have, but in a superstar driven league, they do not have one. I am optimistic this team is young and good, but not actually expecting anything great to happen yet.

Beating up on bad teams is important in getting a good seed. But it does not really tell you how they will fare against quality opponents. If they win enough to get the three seed they would at least have a great shot at making the second round. A solid showing there could elevate them to to where stars see them as a legit destination.
But we still have to wait a few weeks to see if this team can sustain their success against better opponents or whether they are just on a hot streak where they are taking aadvantage of the level of competition.

Brand is going to make 18 million. If you can trade Nocioni’s expiring contract, that’s 25.5 million off the books. That much to spend and winning a playoff series means we can land a top free agent.

I think most of us want Turner to develop into a star but I think Meeks does works best with the starting lineup as of right now. Floor spacing, while funny, makes a lot of sense. If Meeks hits his shots, it makes so much sense for him to be out there complimenting Jrue and Iguodala/

my gf got me tickets for Christmas. Naturally they were for the Heat game on Feb 3rd. People still have the luxury of choosing which games they which games to go to so they are going to choose games against good teams more often than not.
