The 7-2 Philadelphia 76ers are receiving a ton of attention from the national media and casual NBA fan as of late. They sit atop the Atlantic Division, rank first in the league in offensive efficiency, defensive efficiency and point differential, and own a six game winning streak, in which they've outscored their opponents by an average of 22 points per game.
Despite the impressive superlatives, the Sixers have not faced impressive competition since their opening night loss to the Blazers in the Rose Garden. They've played decent teams like the Jazz and Suns on the road, and a tough Pacers team – without Danny Granger – but haven't played a "difficult game" since Portland. That should change tonight when they travel to Madison Square Garden to face division foe, the Knicks of New York.

Some may argue that the Knicks themselves don't present much of a test for the Sixers, who have been steamrolling opponents as of late, and that may be the case. However; tonight's game presents new challenges the Sixers have yet to face this season. First, Carmelo Anthony is the first "superstar" the Sixers will have to defend. Secondly, the Sixers will be playing their third game in three nights – uncharted territory for NBA players – so who knows how their bodies will react. And lastly, I think the Knicks will be fired up to get a shot at the suddenly darling Sixers, and you know MSG will be rockin' for this game.
So far this season the Knicks have been a very mediocre team who don't excel in any one area. They're below average in assist ratio, offensive rebound rate, defensive rebound rate, total rebound rate and effective field goal percentage. And they're only slightly above average in turnover ratio (10th), true shooting percentage (14th), offensive efficiency (13th) and defensive efficiency (14th).
Outside of Carmelo and Amar'e the Knicks have a difficult time scoring the basketball. Tyson Chandler averages 12 per game and rookie Iman Shumpert has averaged 13.2 in 5 games (2 starts) this season. Other than that, yikes. Landry Fields and Toney Douglas were supposed to take a step forward this season, but they've both been atrocious, accumulating PERs of 9.8 and 8.0 respectively. Both are shooting under 43 percent from the field.
Key Stats
They way I look at it, there's only three ways the Knicks can win this game. One, the third game in three nights paired with raucous MSG crowd is too much for the Sixers to handle. Two, the Knicks starters build insurmountable leads in the first and third quarters. And three, the Knicks get a huge breakout performance from one of their role players i.e. Landry Fields, Toney Douglas, etc.
On paper, the Sixers should win this game and extend their winning streak to seven. Andre Iguodala should be able to slow down Carmelo Anthony, and the "Night Shift" should be able to abuse the Knicks league-worst bench of Josh Harrellson, Bill Walker, Toney Douglas and Mike Bibby. But when division rivals square off in Madison Square Garden, with one playing their third game in three nights, expect the unexpected. It also sounds like the Sixers may be without starting center, Spencer Hawes – whose vast improvement is a big part of the Sixers early-season success – with a lower back strain.
I'm excited to see how the Sixers respond to success. Will they continue their warpath of the NBA, whether it's against good teams, bad teams, at home or on the road? Will they be able to win a close game in a hostile environment without a true "closer" – something they've struggled with in previous seasons? Will their early season dominance be proven fraudulent as they're finally exposed by a admirable opponent? Whatever happens, we should know a lot more about the 2011-2012 Sixers by the end of the night, and I can't wait.

Why are you concerned about the 3rd quarter? We’ve only had two bad 3rd quarters defensively so far Portland & New Orleans
KJ Brophy - January 11, 2012
I think we win this, 3rd night and all. Our biggest weakness is 1/2 court offense and physical big men. Knicks like to run, play no defense, and outside of Chandler (who for some reason I think will get into early foul trouble tonight) I’m not scared of their big men. As we learned from Negrodamus last night, teams that run don’t like to be run on. If we can keep the Knicks to one and done’s like Sactown last night, then we can use the defensive boards to transition to easy offensive baskets. I agree we should win tonight but then again, that’s why we play them. More than anything, I just really don’t like D’Antoni and what he calls basketball. Take your fun and gun and go away.

If the Knicks shoot a high percentage from the field and the Sixers still pull off a win, I think a tiny whiff of the Sixers Kool-Aid may be in order. Winning a game when the other team isn’t shooting blindfolded would help me become a believer.
Michael Levin - January 11, 2012
that blindfold is the hands of iggy, jrue, turner and young closing out on defense
E.T.23 - January 11, 2012
I’ll be even more impressed if the Knicks out-score the Sixers and the Sixers win.
Jordan Sams - January 11, 2012 via mobile
That’d be something.
Michael Levin - January 11, 2012
What do we get for THAT?! Double Whoppers?!
dp - January 11, 2012
What if the Knicks shoot a low percentage from the field and the Sixers hold them to 86 points or under? Kool-Aid shots on me.
PhillyWarrior - January 11, 2012
I’m going tonight! Nosebleeds, but whatever. Anyone else showing up?

Vucevic to start?
Has anyone confirmed this? Or rather, I think the better question is, is anyone else as excited as I am to see him in his first big moment? I’d like to see if Vuce could put up something like 20/10 tonight (I know that’s probably extreme optimism) but I am excited to watch him grow along with the rest of the guys in Doug Collins’ system. I personally have not watched him play (can’t get sixers in CT), so I can’t say he passes my eye test, and maybe some of the fellow LBers could explain more on it, but as for stats coming off the bench as a rookie, I think he’s been one of the best, especially for what we needed (a big man), for where we were drafting last year, and the short off-season.
Vince1129 - January 11, 2012
I think he’s looked worlds better so far than he did in the preseason. His jumper is so pretty. I haven’t watched every minute, so I can’t speak to his defense completely, but I’ve seen him grab some tough rebounds and play well defending the post at times. I must admit, so far he’s been much better than I expected
egogineni - January 11, 2012
He doesn’t have the foot speed to be a great defender but I think he’s smart enough where he won’t be a liability like spencer hawes can be at times. His jumper and soft touch around the basket will keep him in the league for a long time. Probably best suited as a back-up big though but every good team needs those.
E.T.23 - January 11, 2012
He also lacks the athleticism to ever be a good shot blocker
egogineni - January 11, 2012
I’m really pumped for this game. I should get out of work just in time. If Dre can slow down Carmello, which I think he will, I think we’ll win this game. If Stoudemire is on, he might really go to town on our slower group of big guys. As long as we continue to play solid team defense and don’t let both of their stars go off I think we’ll be fine. I think Dre only played like 25 mins last night too so he should have a decent amount in the tank to play his crazy-good defense on Melo.
jrb5094 - January 11, 2012
I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but AI’s defensive numbers vs Melo aren’t that fabulous. He’s averaging 26/7/2 and shooting 46%

Well the penultimate and antepenultimate were nice.

I hope Melo and Amare both shared the same ice cream and get a case of the poops

Trap game.
At least we play against the abominable Wizards next. We are out with Spencer Hawes, so this game might come down to the wire.

Wokjab - January 11, 2012
Fail
Wokjab - January 11, 2012
Trap game? Isn’t that usually reserved for a seemingly easier game that is followed by a tougher game that the team is looking ahead to?
yosoysean - January 11, 2012
I'm looking forward to how the Sixers handle Chandler
The guys an absolute BEAST inside and this will be the first legitimate big man they are facing (and maybe without Hawes). He may be only averaging 12 but he’s shooting 70% and gets to the line alot for a big man (6.8 per), which shows teams are hacking him alot to stop him. He’s also a monster on the offensive glass. If we are down Hawes, Vuc and Brand are REALLY going to have their hands full.
BrandonB - January 11, 2012
I will be more impressed if they win this game without Hawes, since it would mean someone else stepped up to control the Knicks front-court. Still, our back-court overwhelms theirs and the Sixers should be able to control the game with their defense, forcing the Knicks into lots of turnovers.
The real key to the game is the Knicks ability to stop the Sixers from scoring. I think they are vulnerable to other teams driving on them and if the Sixers get inside shots and to the line, they will run away with it.
RickoT - January 11, 2012
There isnt a team I hate more than the Knicks. All of my NY fans are saying how its gonna be a blowout tonight and sixers have no shot. Nothing would make me happier than to the Sixers go into the garden and have another dominant win.
On a separate note. It seems like they will be without hawes. first question is that confirmed and second are we going small with Thad or is the rookie getting his first start.

but i live in ct, love philly sports. i get knicks games here and can honestly they are not good and extremely overrated. melo and amare force so many shots and the whole knicks team does not play defense. knicks really arent something to be too afraid of

gonna be
At cuse nova game watching a blowout there… Will be checking constantly on the phone.
Key for me is can they control amare bc they don’t have anyone to really match up with him.
Melo will get his but will take a ton of shots to get them. Not worried.
Also I hope we force shumpert into a ton I turnovers. He has been solid but ny fans are talking about him like he is the chosen one.
SacNasty - January 11, 2012 via iPhone app
I am getting very emotional as the game is approaching. Hope ‘Dre will play his usual good defense against ’Melo. It think that with or without Hawes we could have problems against Chandler in the front court. Hope we can counterbalance it with Brand and the guys from the bench. Let’s go Sixers, beat the Knicks!
apfan - January 11, 2012
I’d also like to see Jrue playing a great game against Shumpert
apfan - January 11, 2012
Hawes is out
