Investigating The Sixers and Their Injury-Ridden Opponents

You already know the Sixers are 7-2, winners of six straight and tops in the Atlantic Division. And you've probably noticed a few times that the Sixers have played an opponent that's not been at full speed. But I doubt you realize just how debilitated the Sixers' opposition has been in games versus Philly.

Let's consult the statistics.

Sixers 107, Warriors 79 - Golden State was without their best offensive weapon (and non-Sixer) Monta Ellis who was out with "a family matter", replacing him with rookie Klay Thompson. 'Ta averaged 21 points and 8 assists going into that game. Klay scored 3 points on 3 shots in 26 minutes. Not exactly replacement level.

Star-divide

Sixers 101, Hornets 93 - An already-terrible New Orleans club was missing their best defensive wing in Trevor Ariza, having to insert second year sack of raw potatoes Al-Farouq Aminu in his stead. Until Ariza had gotten hurt the previous game, he had been right around his career norms of 11, 6, and 3. Aminu played 20 minutes of illiterate basketball, going 0-4 from the field for zero points.

Pistons 73, Sixers 96 - The happily mediocre Pistons were without Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva, and Rodney Stuckey. Now, I don't particularly think any of those guys are good basketball players. But they can each score and, when the team they did put out there shot 36% from the field and missed all 10 of their three-point attempts, it's clear some offense would've been welcomed even at the expense of the the other end. They were replaced by Brandon Knight (5-15), Jonas Jerebko (3-9), and Austin Daye (2-11). The trend continues.

Pacers 86, Sixers 96 - What was supposed to be their first true test of the winning streak was made significantly easier by the fact that Danny Granger and George Hill were in street clothes. Danny (food poisoning) was replaced by Dahntay Jones who did a decent job (12 points on 10 shots) but because he was out, Andre Iguodala switched over to Paul George, who was supposed to take on a bigger role. PG shot 4-16 for 13 points along with 5 giveaways. Hill had AJ Price take his backup point guard duties and the laptop snatcher went 1-7 from the field in 15 minutes. While Granger hasn't been his best so far, he's still their best option, and an efficient Hill would have done wonders at both ends of the court to limit turnovers and poor shot selection.

Kings 85, Sixers 112 - And just like that, the JIMMER gets his first start in the bigs. Marcus Thornton was out with a left thigh contusion so Jimmer Fredette started in his place. Young James went 2-7 in 24 minutes, turned the ball over thrice, and played some of the worst defense the NBA has seen this season. Though MT isn't exactly a stud on the other end, he's a glove compared to Jimmer and his offense makes up for defensive shortcomings. Without Thornton on the road, the Sixers exploited the Kings lack of depth and notched another win.

I'm not saying these wins don't count, I'm not saying these wins aren't important, nor am I saying that if these guys were healthy, the Sixers wouldn't be 7-2. But when trying to judge a team on their current merits and future indicators, all wins are not created equal. These are five opponents missing crucial players that fell to the hands of a healthy, chemistry-happy, fresh team. It speaks volumes about Collins that he has his guys focused enough to play each game til the final whistle, but it doesn't make them a title contender or anything other than a decent team with some casual NBA fans talking.

We'll see what happens when the Sixers face the Knicks tonight, who will be without Baron Davis - yet to play a game for NY. They've got three relatively cake games (Wizards x2, Bucks before a loaded threesome of Denver/Atlanta/Miami wait. That'll be when their marbles are weighed. Against bad teams without their best offensive weapon, they don't even register on the scale. Patience, friends.

Just from my gut, I still think we win all those games except for maybe Indiana. With respect to Indiana, teams are probably pretty close but Sixers still with a slight edge IMO. Finally, I’d be curious as to the same comparison around the league. Lots of teams have people out on any given night in this compressed schedule so I’d be curious if our experience is average, above, below. Last thing, I’m cautiously optimistic we can sustain this for the most part because no one is really playing over their heads. Hawes might be the lone exception but he’s been hurt/limited past couple games. Everyone is, without looking up the stats, seems to be playing about where they should for the most part.

Injuries Happen

Guys miss games all the time. The Kings and Raps got to play the Sixers w/o Hawes for most of the game. The Heat lost to GSW last night without Curry. You play who is in front of you, and the Sixers took care of business.

More injuries will happen this season than most with the condensed season. If haters want to believe the Sixers are only winning because of injuries, they will just keep on believing that.

PS – Baron Davis doesn’t count – he’s always injured – and when he does play, he’ll be about 5,000 Big Macs past his prime

The “haters” tag is definitely the most confusing/hilarious. How people confuse “thinking the Sixers are a decent team playing worse teams” with “the 6ers sux i hate dem fire andy reid 2 lmao” completely baffles me.

the 6ers sux i hate dem fire andy reid 2 lmao

That made me laugh because a lot of the fans that this team is gaining are probably the same ones who are always calling for Reid’s head.

True. I call those fans the WIPions bc they base their opinions on how many other callers complain the loudest. They hate Andy Reid for being vanilla in press conferences (The horror. The horror.) and they comment on the sixers after having watched only the second half of the home opener and maybe a little sixers action during commercial breaks from American Idol.

whatever hater – youl never convince me the 6ers sux!!

These are all fair points...

…In this piece regarding the 76ers opponents, and in a month we will have a better picture of this team.

I do think it is over-kill as far as analysis goes. I realize that this is only one example but i want to play devils advocate. Just the other night the heat minus James and wade went on the road and beat a good hawks team.

Also look at the Portland trailblazers. Losing Oden (shocker) and Roy has not been as detrimental to them as many thought. Opponents injuries are Not a good enough reason to temper our expectations for this team.

What I want fans and analysts to do is to take a step back from the various angles that we can break matchups down into and look at the improvement that the players on the 76ers roster have made. Also, examine fact that the 76ers, as a playoff team, are beating the teams they should be beating. When we lost to teams like sac and golden state early last year would we as fans make the excuse that the opposition had the great Monta Ellis so it is no wonder we lost? Does Marcus Thornton make enough of a difference, on any roster, to warrant this kind of analysis? Possibly, but not like the heat without their big two.

These are good wins by a good team that is getting better, and they are using the nba’s secret weapon that few teams seem wiling to use, team defense. As long as that continues players like Monta Ellis and Marcus Thornton on bad teams will not be able to derail what the 76ers are doing. If the 76ers drop the team philosophy and selfless intenstity they will lose to bad teams, but winning is contagious and this group is afflicted.

I think there are plenty more wins to come, and plenty of room for our young core of players to continue to improve.

If we were barely beating these teams I would probably be on the pessimistic side, that’s not happening though. Some of these teams have beaten other teams that are considered good without the players they missed against us. We can only play who’s put in front of us

We can only play who’s put in front of us

For the hundredth time, I’m not condemning them for playing bad teams. I’m saying WE DON’T KNOW YET. Reserving judgment is not a bad thing, it’s not hating, and it’s not even being negative. It’s just waiting to see more before coming to a decision that I’m comfortable writing about.

Good job Michael. I’m waiting for the actual good teams to come out and give this team a real test. At least their record will be nice enough that when they do start losing, they won’t be at the bottom of the league. Only game I see them losing this week is vs Knicks. They had better beat the Wizards.

Then again, Sixers are destroying these bad teams, and that is a sign of a great team. Winning the games they are suppose to be winning. Not that the Sixers are a great team but they certainly are on the right track. Now all we can do is wait. Depending on how well Sixers do against elite is a better indication of where they are.

Doug: “If you’re losing, you’re losing. But if you’re winning, it’s like ‘who are you beating’,” Collins said after the game. “It’s pretty interesting. Phoenix the other night beat Portland by 25 at their place. Utah is undefeated at home. New Orleans goes in and beats Denver last night. Golden State beat the Chicago Bulls. I don’t get into all that nonsense. These are all professional teams.”

Take the wins just as they are….wins. Lets not forget that this team was one of the better teams in the nba after their horrible 3-13 start. They’re just picking up where they left off, only this time the young players are more devloped and everyone is buying into playing tough deffense every night. This team plays hard and right now that’s working. Just enjoy it and be thankful that basketball is finally a positive subject in philly again.

I cant really judge this team for good or bad till after the first round of the playoffs.
Till then i’m gonna enjoy the way this team plays, and the sudden abundance of Sixers fans

Judging a team based on 4-7 games is worse than judging a team based after 9 games.

Good teams win the games they’re supposed to win. The sixers are a good team. Though not great, I still believe they’ll win the NBA’s triple A affiliate: the Atlantic division. With a
Guaranteed 3 seed, they may well win a series and then lose to Chicago in 5 or 6. That’s great progress for this young team.
