Does Andre Iguodala Deserve NBA All-Star Consideration?

In Saturday's win over the Detroit Pistons, Andre Iguodala recorded the eighth triple double of his career and his self-alley oop appeared on highlight reels everywhere. The eight year veteran has averaged nearly 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists during his career and has unquestionably been the face of the Philadelphia 76ers franchise since Allen Iverson's departure. He, however, has yet to appear in an NBA All Star Game, and the Sixers as a team haven't had a player represent them in the All Star game since Iverson did so in 2006.

Igudoala and his coach, Doug Collins, addressed the possibility of Iguodala being an All Star after the game last night. (Both quotes from Tom Moore via Twitter).

#Sixers Iguodala on not being an all-star in first 7 seasons: "Honestly, I thought I got snubbed twice - once for sure."

#Sixers Collins: 'If we are at the top of the Atlantic Division, he (Iguodala) is going to be an all-star.'

Star-divide

The NBA All Star game is less than a month away. The question is, does Andre Iguodala warrant a spot on the Eastern Conference All Star team?

Let's look at the Eastern Conference All Stars last season. There's five starters, whom are voted in by the fans, and seven reserves chosen by the coaches. Starters: Dwyane Wade, Derrick Rose, Dwight Howard, LeBron James and Amare Stoudemire. Reserves: Ray Allen, Chris Bosh, Kevin Garnett, Al Horford, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo.

It's safe to say Iguodala won't be voted in as a starter, and Wade, Rose, D12 and LeBron are locks to return. That leaves seven reserve spots for Andre to be selected by the coaches. Here are the guys he's going to have to compete against for those final seven spots:

Fortunately, 20 games into the season, Andre Iguodala has a lot working in his favor:

I'm assuming the fans will vote on a starting lineup of Rose and Wade in the backcourt, Bron and Melo as the forwards and Dwight as the center. I'm okay with that. One center – no more, no less – will be chosen, so that leaves six spots. I think Chris Bosh deserves to be there, so that leaves five.

Pierce, Garnett and Rondo will probably all be chosen, but Iguodala deserves to be there just as much as them and probably more than guys like Joe Johnson and Josh Smith.

A lot of Iguodala's push to become a first time All Star will depend on the Sixers performance these next few weeks. Like Collins said, if the Sixers continue to play well – despite the tough stretch upcoming – Iguodala has a great chance to end the Sixers' six year All Star drought. If they stumble against tougher competition, Iguodala has no shot, despite the great season he's turned in thus far.

Do we count it if he gets in as an injury alternate? Doubt Deng will play, and melo might not either.

all sixers forwards are behind bargnani (damn the spelling) and turkoglu and no sixers guards are close to jose calderon. but does fan voting count after the starting 5?

turkolu is better than brand, thad, and Iguodala? What are you smoking these days?

i never said better. they are behind him. in all-star votes.

Paul Pierce, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Luol Deng, Josh Smith, Kevin Garnett

deng and smith are the only deserving forwards this year if you ask me. but alas…carmelo will make it because of his name…and probably so will bosh/pierce

Does Andre Iguodala Deserve NBA All-Star Consideration?

Does Andre Iguodala score 20ppg?

does Rondo?

Rondo has a fancy championship thus raising his visibility.

thats true but its been awhile and it’d be the coach’s ballot deciding anyway.

who, what, where, when, why, and how did you take that comment seriously?

because from your sig tagline, it’d appear that you are an iggy hater

He’s quoting a former commenter on this blog. That’s what the quotes mean.

ah, well, didnt realize he was sarcastically hating on Iggy.

watching the cavs/celtics game. I think I just fell in love with Kyrie Irving. He had an amazing spin move in the lane to take the lead with 2.6 seconds left. Incredible play.

Been really impressed with Kyrie when I’ve watched.

Does he deserve it?

Yes.

Has he deserved it before?

Yes.

Does it matter?

Not really.

It matters because he is a top 30 player and yet people put him in the same class as Luol Deng. Why would an all star want to join a team whose best player is Loul Deng?

i vote daily with the same ballot:

Evans. Lowry. Gay. Aldridge. Dalembert.

Nelson. Holiday. Iguodala. Brand. Hawes.

#WriteInLou

Dont Judge Me.

Jameer Nelson? Really?

i’m from chester man. i gotta represent 20th street.

unfortunately though, an all-star game is not about quality of player. thats what the all-nba and all-defensive teams are for.

the all-star game is to put on a show for the fans. and unfortunately, andre doesn’t provide those self-oops too often. all-star votes aren’t about winning or performance, if that was there’d be no vote, just a statistical formula to decide the rosters.

andre doesn’t have enough “showtime” in his game to be in the all-star game as it exists now.

the control of the hypothesis: if iverson was a bench player for the bobcats who averaged 2.1 points in 13 minutes…he would still be voted in as a starter.

No Deron Williams?

I think you might be forgetting him. I mean he hasn’t been his normal self, but his reputation will get him in regardless.

Indeed. I did forget D-Will, but he’s playing like garbage.

If Iggy doesn’t get named, this will be like him getting jobbed in the dunk contest. Hopefully he’ll be rewarded for his play this year. Otherwise, cue Rodney Dangerfield…

13 ppg wing men don’t get all-star votes all that often.

It’s sad, but it’s true.

honestly I don’t see how any of the boston players deserve the all star game this year. Their team is 9-9 and none of them are having great years or have had great games. Rose Wade Melo LeBron Howard start, that’s a given. I don’t know who the back up Center is this year (usually Horford but he’s injured), then after you put Bosh in there, there are still 5 spots open and I think Iggy deserves one

The C’s will get in based on reputation, unfortunately.

I hope not. I’m hoping that maybe one or two make it, but not the whole “big four”. after all
PPG MIN/G REB/G AST/G FG%
Iguodala 13 34 6.5 5 45
Pierce 18 34 5 5 41
Rondo 15 37 5 9.5 52
Garnett 13 31 8 3 48
Allen 15 34 3 3 50

Iggy has the same production with vastly inferior teammates and similar time on the court

I wouldn’t go so far as to say the celtics are vastly superior to the sixers. Not anymore they’re not. Their roster is certainly lacking in depth compared to ours.

imagine if Iggy got to pass to Ray Allen instead of Jodie Meeks? The Sixers have a better bench but the Celtics starters are still better.

He deserves it every year. This year is no different.

I think he deserves it, but I won’t be shocked if he’s not selected, based on the criteria which have been historically used for all-star selection. I strongly believe that he’s playing his best season ever and contributing for more than the stats say to the team’s success.

If Iggy gets the nod fo the allstar game, it will give purpose to what both he and the sixers have done.
It will also maybe give him a little leway when it comes to his franchise status and his rank among us philly fans.
